Chin Surgery

Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror or in photographs and feel as if your face is out of proportion? If so, it may be because your chin is too small compared to the rest of your face. Augmenting your chin either with a temporary material such as filler or a longer option like a silicone implant can be a quick, easy way to bring balance to your face.* Dr. Harish Ghildiayl has done extensive training in both injectables and the latest surgical devices. He also has a deep understanding of anatomy and how changing one element of the face can completely re-proportion your entire facial contour. During your initial consultation, Dr. Harish Ghildiyal will discuss with you the ideal chin proportions for your face, and review exactly what you can expect from a non-surgical or surgical chin augmentation.

Chin augmentation surgery is commonly performed as a part of facial rejuvenation and in conjunction with a facelift, neck lift, upper and/or lower blepharoplasty or rhinoplasty surgery.

CHIN AUGMENTATION TECHNIQUE

Chin augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery. If Dr. Ghildiyal is using fillers, he will discuss the ideal filler for your needs during your initial consultation. During your chin augmentation with filler, the area will be numbed with a numbing agent and ice. Then, Dr. Ghildiyal will inject the appropriate filler into the area with a very fine needle. If Dr. Ghildiyal is using an implant, he will place a small incision underneath your chin through which he’ll position the silicone implant for optimal results.

PREPARING FOR CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY

As with any major surgery, all medications and supplements which cause an increased risk of bleeding should be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery. Please see our list of medications and supplements to avoid. As always, make sure to check with your doctor before stopping any medications.

RECOVERY FROM CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY

There are no drains or special bandages, but after surgery, you can expect some discomfort and swelling around your chin. This will begin to subside within 24-48 hours. You may experience temporary numbness in your lower lip as the nerves are stretched during surgery, but this will improve with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have fillers put in my chin to see what a chin implant might look like?

This is a tricky question. Dr. Ghildiyal can certainly put fillers in your chin to “test out” whether or not a chin augmentation is for you. These will last for about 12 months.* However, it’s best to have chin augmentation surgery when there are no fillers in the area. Dr. Ghildiyal will discuss the best option for you and why during your initial consultation.

How long will my chin augmentation surgery last? Will I need to have the implant replaced?

The silicone implants used for chin augmentation are like the silicone implants used in breast augmentation surgery, but they are made of a firmer silicone. Once placed in the body, chin implants should be able to remain there without needing to be replaced.

Will the chin implant move after surgery?

The chin implant should not move after the surgery. Dr. Ghildiyal will use a suture to secure the implant to make sure it is in the middle of your chin at the time of surgery. Over time your body will form a capsule around the implant to keep it in the proper position.
